Expected & Unexpected Result, Showing Relationship Grammar Focus

In some actual conversation we may express some event or activity that is suitable with our purpose or expectation, sometimes express something contrary to our expectation.

Here is we discuss those kinds of expressions.

1. SHOWING EXPECTED RESULT

In showing expected result we generally use because.
Examples :
- Because it rained hard, We didn't go to that place.
   (We didn't expect to go to that place because it rained hard.)
- Andy wins that competition because he has practiced well.
   (The expectation of practicing well is win that competition)

2. SHOWING UNEXPECTED RESULT

In showing unexpected result we generally use contrastive statement.
They are :
- Although
- Eventhough
- Though
- Despite
- In spite of

In Indonesia they have same meaning, it is meskipun / walaupun.
Pattern :
a. Although/eventhough/though + clause

Examples :
1. Although it rained hard, We went to that place yestarday.
    (We expected not to go to that place, but we did)
2. Andy wins that competition eventhough he has not practiced well.
    (The expecting result is Andy doesn't win that competition because he has not practiced well, but he does)
3. She still comes to the class though she is sick.
    (She is supposed not to come to the class, but she does)

b. Despite/in spite of + Noun phrase / Gerund

Examples :
1. Despite hard rain, We went to that place
    (We expected not to go to that place, but we did)
2. In spite of being sick, she still comes to the class.
    (She is sick, but she still comes to the class, coming to the class is unexpected result)
